As far as the grant goes, this is money well spent. Nick Rogowski on Middle School Magic I especially liked it when you talked with us individually and gave us tips. You really listened and thought about what was best for us. Helena, 5th grade and how to be a good person in every way. I have had so much fun making these essays. You are such a good teacher. Rachel, 5th grade I had a good time and loved writing the odes and personal essays. Garrett, 8th grade, homeschool class In fact, we would rather not take a week off at the end of this five week session. Marzieh Davis, Home school parent Even kids who weren’t very enthused about writing to begin with seem to come out of her classes really fired up about writing. She provides an amazing atmosphere in which kids can share their writing with each other, which just makes writing so much more meaningful for them. My 8-year-old took a 12-week class with her last year and loved it! His grammatical skills improved exponentially over that time, as well, as a side-effect of reading and sharing his work and hearing how others respond to it, along with editing suggestions from Janet. I really can’t recommend her highly enough. We have invited her back to work with our homeschoolers again this year. In fact, when we started organizing our classes again this year, the first question my son asked me was if Janet would be teaching again. Cassandra Love, parent and educator you provided for the kids! I cannot tell you howimpressed I am with all that you were able to accomplish in such a short amount of time - you are truly amazing!! The girls not only LOVED the time they spend with you, they actually began to see the process of writing in a whole new light! Their perspective, alone, is more than I could have hoped for, and the stories and poetry they produced during the single week they spent with you was like nothing they had ever done before. Katie Garner, parent and educator It was with great pride and tremendous emotion that I realized how deep she could get with a group of middle schoolers. During our final session of Camp Ruach 2010, Meggen led a group of 10 preteens as they brainstormed, collaborated, wrote and performed a poetry cycle in front of 150 people… all astonished. She contoured her in-class experience to fit that age group, perfectly! In addition to the performance, Meggen also got the kids very excited about their first “zine.” Meggen put together their individual works as well as their collaborative efforts ina beautiful booklet that the preteens still talk about! Meggen has a great talent, as I have seen, at working with very diverse age groups. She listens and inspires. Meggen’s greatest gift, along with the ability to articulate thoughts in a sensitive manner, is that she creates an atmosphere where children, preteens, and teens alike can feel excited to express themselves.
